It’s the New Year, and I’ve caught on to the trend that many people choose a word or phrase to serve as their guiding principle for the year ahead. This word can be a source of inspiration and motivation, helping to focus our goals and efforts on what really matters.
Embracing this idea, I have chosen the word “becoming.” This simple yet powerful verb is about the idea of personal growth development, and inspiration to strive for constant improvement.
To become signifies transformation and progress. When we talk about becoming, we’re talking about moving from one state or condition to another – from who we are now to who we want to be in the future.
I chose this word because for the past few years I have been in a state of unbecoming. Unbecoming all of the things that I had become that weren’t really true to my soul. I’ve been unbecoming the person who would sacrifice anything for anyone except herself. I’ve been unbecoming the girl who often over-achieved but never felt success. I’ve been unbecoming the person who lost her identity somewhere along the way of life. Peeling off layer by layer of a person that I had become so that I could now start to build the person I was meant to be.
I’m becoming once again to be the person that I am proud of. This year is about growth, opportunity, and soul.
So, how can you use “becoming” as your word of the year? Here are a few ideas:
- Reflect on what you want to become. Take some time to think about what you want to achieve or improve in the coming year. Do you want to become more confident, more skilled, or more compassionate? Whatever it is, make it specific and meaningful to you.
- Make a plan. Once you have a clear idea of what you want to become, make a plan for how you’ll get there. This might involve setting specific goals, identifying steps you need to take, or finding resources or support to help you along the way.
- Keep “becoming” in mind throughout the year. Use your word of the year as a reminder to stay focused on your goals and to keep striving for personal growth and development. When you’re faced with a challenge or an opportunity, ask yourself, “How can this help me become who I want to be?”
- Celebrate your progress. Don’t forget to celebrate your progress along the way. As you work towards becoming something, you’ll undoubtedly encounter setbacks and challenges. But as long as you keep moving forward and learning from your experiences, you’ll be making progress.
Whatever your word of the year might be, visit it often as you journey the next few months!
